Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis

Some things can only be understood if we give them time.

Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis: Some Things Are Only Understood Over Time

There is not always a clear reason. Sometimes it is a sadness that does not lift, an anxiety that tightens without warning, a relationship that repeats itself with different people. At other times everything appears to be fine and yet something does not settle. Any of these is reason enough to begin.

What You Need to Know

What it is

Psychoanalytically oriented psychotherapy begins from a simple idea: what causes us to suffer has a history, and that history can be understood. Rather than working on the symptom alone, we look for what sustains it — the feelings that were never put into words, the patterns that took hold, what was learned too early to have been chosen. This is not advice-giving: we will not tell you what to do with your life. It is joint work, in which your own words are the instrument and time is the condition.

Who it is for

For those living with anxiety, depressive symptoms, grief, relational difficulties or a persistent disturbance in how they see themselves. For those who have tried other approaches and feel that what lay underneath was never addressed. And for those who simply want to understand themselves better, which is reason enough and requires no clinical justification.

How it works

We begin with a few assessment sessions, in which we establish together what brings you here and whether this is the right approach for you. If it is, we agree a clear framework: frequency, session length and working conditions. If it is not, we say so honestly and help you find what does make sense. Sessions are usually weekly. Some courses of therapy last months and others years — the decision is always yours, and is reviewed with you.

Working alongside the rest of your care

Being part of a medical clinic, psychotherapy works alongside psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry and the medical consultations a person may already have with us, whenever that is useful. There is no border here between body and mind: we are treating the same person.

What you can expect

Confidentiality without exception. Listening that does not judge and is not hurried. Practitioners with accredited training and regular clinical supervision. And honesty about what psychotherapy can and cannot do.

Asking for help is not a sign of weakness, but of courage. Putting what you feel into words is the beginning of any change. Book your first appointment. The first step is simply to talk.
